Wastefront’s Port of Sunderland plant was already considered a climate milestone but in December 2023, independent energy expert and assurance provider DNV undertook a new assessment of the plant – covering construction, operation, and decommissioning – and found its environmental benefits to be even more pronounced than before. Life Cycle Assessment Update: The increased size of the Port of Sunderland plant - versus original plans - and the optimisation of configuration will result in a higher reduction of emissions; approximately 2.7mn metric ton (mt) of CO2 emissions over the plant’s operational lifespan. Carbon Yield Impact: The Carbon Yield quantifies the environmental impact of an investment in terms of emissions avoided per annum, demonstrating how Wastefront’s Blueprint will have a major impact on global efforts to cut emissions. The ratio of total investment per plant, for CO2 avoided, is approximately 50$/mt CO2. This low value means that investing in a Wastefront plant is a highly cost-efficient way to reduce CO2 emissions. Counterfactual Scenarios: The approach adopted by Wastefront includes considering counterfactual scenarios (what would happen if the company did not exist). In the UK market, where ELTs are often incinerated or exported abroad, Wastefront’s global plans will have a significant climate impact that reverses an increasingly damaging trend. In 2022, 395,000 mt of ELTs (80% of the total number of ELTs generated) were exported from the UK to overseas destinations. ELTs across Europe continue to increase in volume, as do the amount of ELTs in the US that are either landfilled or unaccounted for. Moreover, many applications previously accepted for their positive effect on CO2 emissions, such as utilising ELT crumbs in playgrounds, are being banned by a growing number of countries for generating harmful contaminants. We work hard to ensure that all our processes and equipment are compliant with, and often exceed, the requirements of regulations set by local environmental authorities. Our mission is to address a global problem with our Blueprint and scale at the rate necessary to empower customers to meet climate targets and future-proof their supply chains.

Through our commitment to sustainability, we address Goals 12 and 13, to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, and to take urgent action to mitigate climate change, plus Goal 9 as we provide solutions to major global industrial problems.
